Reds reject Carroll approach
It would be fair to say that the rumour mill has been going frantic following Brendan Rodgers’ announcement last week that Andy Carroll could be allowed to leave on loan. However, it is understood that the Reds have already turned down an approach for the 23-year-old – which is coincidently from his former club Newcastle.
News started to filter through on Sunday that the Magpies had attempted to take their former striker on loan, with a view to a permanent move. Some sources claimed that Alan Pardew had even tabled a bid of £10m, which would be quite incredible considering the £35m that the player commanded less than two years ago.
However, it has been confirmed that the offer has been rejected. It is thought that Liverpool are not prepared to let the player leave on a temporary basis and at the same time, the transfer fee that Newcastle offered was significantly below their asking price. Moreover, it is has also been reported that if a loan deal for Carroll is agreed, the Reds will probably have to subsidise some of his £80,000 per week wages. This is something that Anfield chiefs are considerably against.
It remains to be seen whether or not Newcastle return with an improved offer. Various media outlets are suggesting that even though Carroll is a born-and-bred Geordie, his preference is to still remain at Anfield and fight for a place. At the same time, with Demba Ba and Pappa Cisse both clear first choice strikers for Alan Pardew, it is not clear that an attacking player is top of Newcastle’s shopping list. Instead, it appears as though Newcastle have acted following Brendan Rodgers’ comments about Carroll last week and attempted to net their former star man at a knockdown price.
Still, it is clear to see that Carroll will have to do a lot to convince Rodgers that he is good enough for Liverpool. Following the signing of Fabio Borini last week, Carroll’s selection chances have been hindered again and it’ll be interesting to see how this story continues through the summer.
