Rush backs Gerrard to break penalty record

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has backed Steven Gerrard to break Jan Molby’s all-time Reds penalty record, the Mirror understands.

The 33 year old has netted two spot-kicks in his last two games to take his tally to thirty seven leaving him third on the list, one behind Phil Neal and a further four off Molby’s total of 42.

Rush believes that with the way Brendan Rodgers’ side are playing, with their pace going forward, they are likely to be awarded more penalties before the end of the season, while he also has backed the England skipper to continue his success from twelve yards next year.

Meanwhile, Gerrard has backed Raheem Sterling to join him at this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil, according to ESPN.

The winger has been in great form this season, scoring six times in twenty games in all competitions, and his captain is sure that England manager Roy Hodgson will have taken notice.

The 19 year old, who won his one and only full international cap so far in the 4-2 friendly defeat against Sweden at the Friends Arena back in November 2012, is expected to be named in the squad to face Denmark next month.
