In The Papers: 23rd August
Even though the transfer window is just around the corner, the newspapers appear to have run out of gossip in relation to Liverpool’s incoming transfers. Instead, the media have been concentrating on other issues and it will be no surprise to see that Andy Carroll is one of them.
The Guardian is reporting that Newcastle still retain an interest in their former striker, but will only offer a loan agreement with a view to a £12m transfer next summer. Understandably, the newspaper is suggesting that Brendan Rodgers is completely against such a proposal.
The same outlet claims that the Reds are still in the chase for Nuri Sahin, even though there has been widespread speculation linking him with a switch to Arsenal. According to The Guardian, Liverpool are still in the hunt, with Jose Mourinho stating that he doesn’t care which club the midfielder joins.
However, while there are murmurs of a possible exit for Andy Carroll, the Daily Mirror is hinting at departures for two other players. The newspaper is suggesting that John Henry is personally trying to oversee the sale of Jay Spearing and Charlie Adam, so the Reds can meet Fulham’s valuation for Clint Dempsey. In fact, it is being suggested that the club are trying to persuade Adam to move to Craven Cottage as part of an exchange deal for the American.
A move for Dempsey would correlate with a story by The Mirror, with the paper running an article about Brendan Rodgers still wanting to bolster his squad. Rodgers has said that the Reds’ squad currently lacks depth and says that he will be looking to conduct plenty of business before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
Meanwhile, in a story completely unrelated to transfer news, Rodgers has told the Daily Mail that he is taking the Europa League game against Hearts seriously. This comes despite the fact that the Reds are leaving several high-profile players on Merseyside, with Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel being just several who are not travelling.
