In the Papers: 27th August
Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of newspaper headlines have focussed on Liverpool’s impressive result against Manchester City on Sunday. Most of these media outlets have also concentrated on Brendan Rodgers’ comments after the game, after he said that he thought “the best team didn’t win”.
There have been other stories circulating the papers, with one from the Metro suggesting that Newcastle are set to renew their interest in Andy Carroll. The paper is reporting that the Magpies are set to table a final £17m bid for the striker in the hope of Liverpool cutting their losses. However, if the report does prove to be correct, it would certainly appear unlikely for the Reds to accept a deal considering Rodgers’ strong views on the subject last week.
Elsewhere, the Daily Mail are reporting that Lucas Leiva is poised for a scan after hobbling off just minutes into the draw with City. It’s being suggested that Rodgers is concerned that the player has suffered a re-occurrence of a serious knee problem and the club are looking to get him treated as soon as possible.
Crunch Sports have also run a couple of stories on the club, with the first relating to midfielder Joe Cole. The outlet are stating that the Reds are looking to get Cole off their books this week, with Rodgers more than open to offers for the 30-year-old. Crunch Sports have also run a story on Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge and have suggested that Rodgers is contemplating a switch for the out-of-favour former Manchester City man.
In other news, the Chester Chronicle have reported that Xabi Alonso was the reason why Nuri Sahin completed a transfer to Anfield. Despite most outlets claiming that it was Rodgers’ friendship with Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho that prompted the deal, the Chester Chronicle has quotes from Sahin that say it was Alonso’s influence that pushed through a move.
