Rodgers: Patience is the key

Following a disappointing start to the season, there’s no doubt that a lack of cutting edge is to blame for Liverpool’s current position of 18th. According to Brendan Rodgers, the only way the Reds are going to come out of this rut is if they start to attack with a bit more patience.

Having played three top flight games so far, the Reds have only managed to score a disappointing two goals. Supporters have been even more frustrated with the situation considering the lacklustre transfer approach, with Rodgers offloading £35m striker Andy Carroll on loan to West Ham without bringing in any sort of replacement. This means that he has just two senior strikers available in the form of Fabio Borini and Luis Suarez – with neither regarded as an out and out goal scorer.

However, the former Swansea boss remains positive. He insists that the Reds are still doing a lot of things right and that the build-up play is actually very good. Speaking to the press he said, “We build the game very well through the thirds, but it’s about making sure that when we arrive in the final third, if we can’t find the moment to score straight away, we maybe have to have that bit more patience. That has a knock-on effect to the team. When you are that little bit more patient at the top end of the field, everyone else behind that then can get into position. We’ve created enough chances to score goals in the games. That’s been pleasing.”

There is certainly no doubt that the international break couldn’t have come at a better time for the Reds. Despite all of the optimism at the start of the season, all of that positivity has now evaporated and there are already concerns emerging about the management of the club – both at boardroom level and about Rodgers himself. Hopefully, during this two week period, Rodgers can start to instil the patience principles into the team that he talks about here.
