SLOT HAILS CHIESA AFTER IMPRESSIVE FIRST START
Arne Slot has praised Liverpool’s summer signing Federico Chiesa after the Italian registered an assist in his first start for the club. Chiesa played a crucial role in Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over West Ham at Anfield, setting up Diogo Jota’s first-half equalizer and showing promising signs of his potential impact on the team.
Chiesa, who joined Liverpool from Juventus in a £12.5 million deal, has been working his way back to form after a serious knee injury sustained shortly after his standout performances at Euro 2020. His recovery and subsequent struggle to regain top form meant he saw limited action before his move to Anfield. The match against West Ham was a significant step in his comeback, with Slot expressing satisfaction at the winger’s display.
“It was pleasing to see that he could already play 60 minutes because he hasn’t played a lot,” Slot said. “He has hardly played any minutes in the last three or four months. So for him, it is important to get more match minutes, and that’s what he got today.”
Slot acknowledged that Chiesa is still adjusting to his new surroundings but was impressed with his early contribution. “He assisted, although it was a shot on target that was promoted by Diogo to a goal,” he added. “He worked really hard. I think it’s normal that he’s not already at the top of his ability. He has to get used to the club, his teammates, and the playing style. It was very good to see how match-fit he already is, so that we can use him if we need him.”
Chiesa’s hard work and adaptability bode well for Liverpool, as Slot looks to integrate the winger into his squad. Despite not being at his peak, Chiesa’s 60-minute performance showcased his readiness to contribute to the team. Slot’s willingness to provide opportunities for new signings to find their feet reflects the depth and flexibility within Liverpool’s squad this season.
The head coach was equally pleased with his team’s overall performance at Anfield, where Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo each netted braces, complemented by a goal from Mohamed Salah. “You asked me about new players [all summer], and I constantly told you guys how many quality players we already have,” Slot remarked. “Even if a lot of new players come in, they don’t come in and try to have a good individual performance — they work really hard for the team.”
Slot’s comments highlight the team-first mentality he is fostering at Liverpool, where new signings are expected to contribute to the collective effort rather than simply showcase individual talents. This approach appears to be paying off, as Liverpool’s performance against West Ham demonstrated their depth and attacking prowess.
Looking ahead, Slot reacted to Liverpool’s draw for the Carabao Cup fourth round, which pits them against Brighton away. “Again, it’s a difficult draw,” he admitted. “Almost all the strong teams are still in. If you want to win this cup, then you will play against difficult opponents.” Slot’s response underscores the challenge that lies ahead, but Liverpool’s recent form and squad depth suggest they will be ready to face whatever comes their way.
