LIVERPOOL: NO TO PREM SUMMER SERIES
Liverpool have opted out of the Premier League’s request to participate in its overseas Summer Series tournament, with the Reds instead considering alternative pre-season destinations. While the league plans to hold the event in the USA this July, Liverpool’s focus appears to be elsewhere, with Japan and Hong Kong emerging as possible locations for their summer preparations.
The Athletic reports that the Premier League’s Summer Series will feature Manchester United, Bournemouth, West Ham, and Everton, provided they maintain their top-flight status. Matches are set to take place in Atlanta, New Jersey, and Chicago, as the league continues its efforts to expand its global reach. While Bournemouth are all but safe, the other three clubs remain in a relegation battle, adding an element of uncertainty to their participation.
Liverpool’s decision to decline an invitation suggests a different approach to pre-season, prioritising a schedule that suits their needs rather than commercial commitments. Last summer, they toured the USA, facing Real Betis, Arsenal, and Manchester United. This time, reports indicate a shift towards Asia, with the new Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong a potential venue for one of their fixtures.
The club’s absence from FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup also means they will not be involved in the high-profile 32-team competition, set to be held in the USA. Manchester City and Chelsea will represent England, alongside European giants such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain. While Liverpool’s omission may be surprising given their status as one of Europe’s best sides, it does allow for a more controlled and less demanding summer schedule.
With the 2025/26 season in mind, Liverpool will be keen to ensure their squad is in peak condition from the outset. A pre-season tour that balances fitness, preparation, and commercial obligations will be key, and opting out of the Summer Series may reflect a desire for greater flexibility. The club is expected to finalise its summer itinerary soon, as they look to fine-tune their preparations ahead of another title-challenging campaign.
As for the Premier League’s Summer Series, this will be the second edition of the tournament, following its debut in 2023, which featured Brentford, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Fulham, and Brighton. While Liverpool won’t be part of it, their focus will be on a structured pre-season aimed at ensuring they are fresh and ready for the challenges ahead.
