Liverpool go out in style
Liverpool were last night knocked out of the Europa League after losing to Zenit St. Petersburg on the away goals rule.
Trailing by two goals from the first leg, the Reds went behind on the night after Brazilian striker Hulk’s 19th minute finish following a mistake from Jamie Carragher.
However, two superb free kicks from top scorer Luis Suarez, either side of Joe Allen’s finish just before the break gave Brendon Rodgers’ men hope.
There was still half an hour to play after Suarez’s particularly impressive second strike, though despite efforts from Steven Gerrard, Jonjo Shelvey and Suarez once more, Liverpool were not able to get the fourth goal they required to progress into the last sixteen of the competition.
Attention will now turn to qualifying for Europe next season, though having played Swansea City last weekend the club are not set to play until they travel to Wigan Athletic a week on Saturday.
Elsewhere, the Reds have been linked with a move for Celtic midfielder Efe Ambrose, following his heroics with Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 24 year old has already amassed 22 international caps, and has scored three goals in eighteen league appearances for the Scottish Champions this season.
