Suarez in new controversy
Liverpool salvaged a point deep into injury time against Chelsea at Anfield yesterday afternoon, in a game that sadly will not be remembered for the 2-2 score line.
The visitors took the lead through Oscar on 26 minutes, before Daniel Sturridge, who was introduced at half-time, equalised soon after the break.
Eden Hazard restored Chelsea’s lead from the penalty spot five minutes later, after Luis Suarez handled in the area though the Uruguayan headed in an equaliser seven minutes into injury time.
However, giving the Blues an opportunity to again go in front clearly irked Suarez, who reacted by biting defender Branislav Ivanovic, though the incident was unnoticed by referee Kevin Friend.
The striker, who committed a similar offence whilst playing for Ajax back in 2010, is expected to be retrospectively punished by the FA, and could well miss the rest of the season.
Suarez was quick to say sorry over the phone to Ivanovic, who has apparently accepted his apology, though the whole affair will again through into question his future at Anfield.
Having reviewed the incident, manager Brendan Rodgers condemned the Premier League’s top scorer, labelling his behaviour as unacceptable, whilst managing director Ian Ayre described his conduct as “not befitting of any player wearing a Liverpool shirt.
