Sigurdsson set for Anfield?

Following the appointment of Brendan Rodgers several weeks ago, there has been plenty of speculation on the future of Gylfi Sigurdsson. However, it appears as though the saga could be concluded in the very near future, with the former Reading man poised to sign for the Reds after rejecting the offer of a permanent switch to Swansea.

Sigurdsson, who enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell at Swansea last term, had agreed to join the Liberty Stadium on a permanent basis last month.

However, that deal was struck when Rodgers was still in charge of the Swans and it is understood that the Iceland midfielder would rather play for his former boss at Anfield. Already, Swansea have been told that the £6.8m deal they agreed is off.

It has been clear for some time that Rodgers has been monitoring the situation, although it appears as though he has tried to be as respectful as he can to his former club. Only last week, the ex-Watford manager said, “I’ve always said I think he’s a player Swansea have had an agreement with and they have to have every chance to try to sign him. That’s only right. If anything changes from that, we’ll look at it from there.”

It would now appear as though the situation has certainly changed, although Liverpool will have to pay a slightly higher fee than the Swans had agreed. Most reports are suggesting that the Reds will fork out £8m for Sigurdsson, who joined current side Hoffenheim from Reading for a fee in excess of £6.5m back in 2010. At that point, the attacking midfielder was seen as a huge prospect although after losing his way somewhat in Germany, he returned to England in on loan at Swansea. Having scored eight goals during that period, the Iceman has attracted significant interest although it looks as though his only desire is to reunite with his former boss.
