Liverpool up to second after returning to winning ways at lowly Sunderland
Liverpool climbed to second place in the Premier League after beating bottom of the table Sunderland 3-1 yesterday afternoon.
Top scorer Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring with his eleventh goal in his last eleven league games, before Luis Suarez doubled the visitor’s advantage on thirty-six minutes.
The Uruguay international was playing in the league for the first time since the 2-2 draw with Chelsea back in April, where the incident that led to his ten game suspension took place.
Emanuele Giaccherini pulled a goal back for the hosts, and in doing so denied Simon Mignolet a clean sheet on his return to the Stadium of Light, before Suarez put the result beyond doubt with his second a minute from time.
The Reds will now turn their attention to Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace, where three points will see them leapfrog Arsenal into top spot, ahead of the Gunners trip to West Bromwich Albion the following day.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are considering a bid for midfielder Philippe Coutinho, according to the Express.
The Brazil international, who is currently out with a shoulder injury, is being tracked by the La Liga side, who enquired about his services during the summer.
