Liverpool stay second with win over Palace
Liverpool secured their fifth win in seven league games this season by beating Crystal Palace 3-1 at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The result was enough to see the Reds briefly return to the top of the Premier League, only to be again replaced by Arsenal following their draw at West Bromwich Albion yesterday afternoon.
Luis Suarez, who was making his first Anfield appearances since returning from his suspension, opened the scoring on thirteen minutes with his third goal in three games.
Top scorer Daniel Sturridge doubled the host’s advantage just four minutes later before Steven Gerrard put the result beyond doubt from the penalty spot seven minutes before the break.
The Liverpool captain now needs just one more goal to reach a century for the Reds in the Premier League, a feat also achieved by Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler.
Dwight Gayle netted a late consolation for the Eagles fourteen minutes from time to deny Simon Mignolet a fifth clean sheet of the season, though the Belgian was relatively untroubled aside from the former Peterborough United man’s effort.
Brendan Rodger’s men will now turn their attention to their trip to Newcastle United a week on Saturday, following the international break.
