Reds still chasing Sigurdsson
Even though it appeared as though Liverpool had lost out to Tottenham in the race for Gylfi Sigurdsson, it now seems as though Brendan Rodgers still has a chance of netting the Hoffenheim forward. Sigurdsson’s father has stated that his son is still mulling over his future, with both Spurs and the Reds in contention for his signature.
The whole Gylfi Sigurdsson saga has certainly been a drawn out process, as it first appeared as though the former Reading man was to join Swansea on a permanent deal, after experiencing a successful loan stint at the Liberty Stadium last term. However, following Brendan Rodgers’ move to Anfield, it became clear that Liverpool was his preferred destination, only for Spurs to enter the reckoning and reportedly offer Sigurdsson a huge financial package to move to White Hart Lane.
Despite advancements from Spurs, the player’s father Sigurdur Adalsteinsson has stated that there are other possibilities and the Reds still have a very good chance of netting the 22-year-old. He said, “Liverpool and Tottenham are both in Europe next season so that is not the question. It always helps when you know the coach like Brendan Rodgers. He is a very good trainer. But does that mean Liverpool? Maybe, maybe not. He is thinking what is best to do and will have a decision by Sunday.”
It is understood that both the Reds and Tottenham have agreed an £8m fee with Hoffenheim for the forward. This is a significantly higher figure than what Swansea had previously negotiated, as their deal was related to the loan agreement that saw Sigurdsson spend the second half of last season at the Liberty Stadium. Even though Brendan Rodgers appears to be linked with many of his old players from Swansea, Reds fans will not be concerned in the slightest about this transfer with several other of Europe’s top clubs also expressing an interest in Sigurdsson.
