Gerrard confident ahead of Germany clash

Steven Gerrard has told Sky Sports that he believes England are only “slight” underdogs ahead of this evenings clash with Germany at Wembley.

The England skipper is preparing to face the Germans for the fourth time in his career having been on the winning side twice, as well as being part of the side that was defeated 4-1 in the last sixteen of the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

The first of those two victories came in a famous World Cup qualifier in Munich in 2001, when the Three Lions, then managed by Sven Goran Eriksson, emerged 5-1 winners with Gerrard firing in long range effort on the stroke of half time to give the visitors the lead – his first goal for his country.

He also came on for the last half an hour of the 1-0 win in the group stages of Euro 2000 – only his second of 107 international caps so far.

England’s loss to Chile on Friday evening came a year and a day from their last defeat while Germany have tasted defeat just once in their last sixteen internationals – a 4-3 loss to the USA in Washington back in June.
