Aquilani could have Reds future
There has been intense speculation for months regarding the future of Alberto Aquilani, with nobody quite knowing what is going to happen to the 27-year-old. However, his agent has given the biggest hint yet that his client could have a future at Anfield, telling reporters that Aquilani will start pre-season training at Liverpool with the hope of impressing Brendan Rodgers.
Having joined the club in 2009, Aquilani’s Reds’ career has been full of disappointment and supporters have certainly not seen the best of him. His first season in English football was hugely turbulent, with injuries hampering him substantially. Fitness issues have continued to affect him over the last couple of years after spells in Serie A and such form means that the midfielder does not have any offers on the table at the moment.
His agent, Franco Zavaglia, has now said that he is hopeful he impresses Rodgers and manages to finally cement a place in Liverpool’s squad. Speaking to TMW, he said, “At the moment Aquilani is a Liverpool player and will certainly start pre-season training with them, then we’ll see what happens. The new manager will decide whether to keep him or not. I don’t think he’s coming back to Italy and he hasn’t expressed any particular preference, but this time I hope Liverpool can tell us in time if he’s not part of their plans so we can find him the right club.”
There is no question that Aquilani will at least be given a chance at Anfield, as Brendan Rodgers has stated that he wants all players to return to the club and attempt to impress him. However, even though he is now over his fitness problems, it remains to be seen whether he still possesses the ability that saw him move to Liverpool in a £17m transfer back in 2009.
