ALISSON DOUBTFUL FOR BOURNEMOUTH
Liverpool could be without their star goalkeeper Alisson for Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, as manager Arne Slot revealed that the Brazilian is dealing with a minor muscle issue. Speaking at a press conference on Friday morning, Slot said that it was uncertain whether Alisson would be fit enough to train ahead of the weekend clash at Anfield.
If Alisson is unable to participate in the final training session at Liverpool’s Kirkby facility on Friday, it is likely that backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher will start against Bournemouth. Kelleher has yet to feature this season but has proven himself as a reliable deputy in previous campaigns.
“Alisson is still a doubt if he can train today, so let’s wait [to see] if he can train,” Slot told reporters. “Then, if he can’t, he will probably not play as well, so we have to wait and see. He has a slight issue with one of his muscles and we are wondering if this game tomorrow comes too early or not. He didn’t take it from the Milan game, it happened a bit before. But after the Milan game, he felt it more and more and now we have to wait and see if he’s ready to be in goal tomorrow or we have to wait a few more extra days.”
Alisson has been a crucial figure for Liverpool this season, starting all five of their matches across all competitions, including their 3-1 victory over AC Milan in the Champions League earlier this week. Despite completing the full 90 minutes in Milan, it seems the Brazilian goalkeeper aggravated a pre-existing muscle issue during the match, putting his availability for the Bournemouth game in doubt.
Slot confirmed that Liverpool have no fresh injury concerns aside from Alisson’s situation, though midfielder Harvey Elliott remains out of action with a fractured foot. “Apart from Harvey Elliott, [there are no other injuries],” Slot added, providing some relief for Liverpool fans ahead of Saturday’s match.
If Alisson is unavailable, Kelleher will be called upon to fill the gap. The Republic of Ireland international has stepped up for Liverpool in the past, making 26 appearances during Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge, including 10 Premier League games after Alisson suffered a serious hamstring injury last February. Known for his performances in cup competitions, Kelleher played a key role in Liverpool’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup runs last season, proving he is more than capable of stepping into the spotlight.
As the team waits for a final decision on Alisson’s fitness, all eyes will be on the upcoming match at Anfield. Liverpool will be looking to extend their strong start to the season, and whether it’s Alisson or Kelleher between the sticks, the Reds will hope to continue their winning form against Bournemouth.
