Alonso set to return?
Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has reportedly refused to sign a new contract at Real Madrid, paving the way for a possible return to Anfield.
The Spanish champions are expected to have a vast change in personnel in the summer, and Alonso looks set to be one of players on his way out of the Bernebeu.
The Express have reported that Real are lining up a move for Paris Saint Germain midfielder Marco Verratti, which would further deem Alonso surplus to requirements.
Alonso lifted the Champions League trophy and the FA cup during his five year spell with Liverpool, which ended in 2009.
Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has described playing for England as “the pinnacle”, following Rio Ferdinand’s withdrawal from the squad for the Wold Cup qualifiers with San Marino and Montenegro.
Whilst insisting that he isn’t fully aware of Ferdinand’s situation, the Liverpool skipper has reiterated his desire to lead his country in to next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
Gerrard will wear the captain’s armband in Serravalle this evening, where England are expected to record a routine victory.
Finally, Jack Robinson scored in England U21’s 3-0 win over Romania last night.
Raheem Sterling, Jonjo Shelvey and Andre Wisdom also played in the match, along with captain Jordan Henderson.
