CARRAGHER: SALAH AIMING FOR RECORDS
Jamie Carragher believes Mohamed Salah is determined to continue playing at the highest level well into his late 30s, with his sights set on breaking as many Premier League and Liverpool records as possible. Salah’s impressive start to the current season, including a goal in the 3-0 win over Manchester United, marked the first time in his eight years at the club that he has scored in the opening three matches of a campaign.
Despite being 31 and approaching the final year of his contract, which expires next summer, Salah appears unfazed by the lack of a renewal offer. With a new record of seven consecutive seasons with 20 or more goals already under his belt, his early form suggests he is on course to extend that streak even further.
The Egyptian international will turn 33 next June, but Carragher believes that won’t slow Salah down or prevent him from continuing his prolific career at the highest level. Comparing him to Cristiano Ronaldo, Carragher expressed confidence that Salah’s ambition will keep him going beyond the typical retirement age for footballers.
“I’m not sure it will be his last year. I think Mo Salah is a little bit like Ronaldo,” Carragher said on *The Gary Neville Podcast*. “Most footballers think 35 is the time to finish. I think Mo Salah will be looking at his late 30s and winding down then in his head.”
Carragher emphasized Salah’s desire to etch his name in football history by breaking as many records as possible, whether at Liverpool or in the Premier League. He expressed doubt that Salah would follow other aging stars to Saudi Arabia, where lucrative deals have attracted big-name players in the twilight of their careers.
“He will be looking at breaking every record he possibly can, either in the Premier League or Liverpool,” Carragher added. “I think he is aware of his status, and I find it very difficult to see Mo Salah in the Saudi League, for instance, next season. He is playing that well at one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
While Salah’s trophy haul might not match some of the more decorated wingers, Carragher argued that few wide players in Premier League history can rival Salah’s combination of quality and goal-scoring ability, placing him alongside legends like Ronaldo at Manchester United.
“You think of Ronaldo at United. I think he is right up there alongside Ronaldo as the best winger we’ve seen in the Premier League,” he said.
Salah, meanwhile, is leaving the door open for Liverpool to make a move on extending his contract, which remains unresolved. After the United match, he expressed his calm approach to the situation: “Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts so I was just like, ‘OK, I play my last season and see at the end of the season’,” Salah told *Sky Sports*.
As speculation mounts over Salah’s future, his performances on the pitch continue to speak volumes. Whether or not a new contract is offered, it’s clear that Salah remains focused on creating a legacy that will cement him as one of the Premier League’s all-time greats.
