In the Papers: 31st August
It would be fair to say that most of the newspapers have been concentrating on Andy Carroll’s recent loan move to West Ham, while a few others have reported on the 2-1 victory over Hearts in the Europa League. Unfortunately, even though the transfer deadline arrives later today, there is little speculation linking Brendan Rodgers with any new players.
Nevertheless, the Daily Mail have run an interesting piece on the Carroll story. It was reported when Carroll initially joined the Reds that he was quickly transported in Mike Ashley’s helicopter so the deal would be concluded in time. It now looks as though a similar scenario has occurred this time, with Carroll again scurrying off in a helicopter in order to complete his move to the Hammers.
In other news, the Mirror are reporting that Charlie Adam is all but certain to leave Anfield later in the day. It’s being reported that no fewer than three clubs are attempting to purchase the former Blackpool midfielder, with Stoke, Everton and Fulham all vying for his signature. A figure of £4m is being branded about, although there are suggestions that Stoke are unable to push through a deal unless they sell Kenwyne Jones.
Elsewhere, the only other report in the newspapers seems to involve Daniel Sturridge. There have been rumours about the Chelsea striker over the past couple of weeks yet following the departure of Andy Carroll, the Guardian are reporting that Brendan Rodgers has stepped up his interest in the former Manchester City man.
The same source has also claimed that the Reds look set to miss out on Clint Dempsey, with Rodgers simply not willing to meet Fulham’s valuation for the American. The Guardian understood that Liverpool’s bid involved cash plus Jordan Henderson, only for the ex-Sunderland midfielder to reject a move out of Anfield.
