In the Papers: August 29th
With the transfer window now just days away, one would imagine that the newspapers would be running out of column inches in relation to transfer rumours. However, in stark contrast to yesterday, there a few transfer headlines about the Reds and it appears as though Brendan Rodgers is performing his business very quietly indeed.
Despite the above being said, the Independent have run a piece on the potential last minute transfer deals that could be occurring at Anfield. The first player linked with a move is Daniel Sturridge, although the newspaper have cast doubts over a possible £15m switch occurring due to his current club Chelsea having just one other striker available. Another player supposedly still on the radar is Clint Dempsey and even though Sunderland have now reportedly entered the chase, the Independent still believe that the Reds are at the front of the queue. The final player in the list is Theo Walcott although the paper are doubtful over such a transfer occurring, with Arsenal likely to bide their time before disposing of the 23-year-old.
The Times has also followed up the Walcott story and claims that Brendan Rodgers is monitoring the player’s situation. This source has stated that the former Southampton winger has rejected a new deal from the Gunners and both Liverpool and Manchester City are vying to sign the player in a £15m deal.
The final rumour comes from several sources, with the Daily Mail and The Mirror being the most significant outlets to report on the story. It is being claimed that midfielder Jay Spearing is set to leave for Bolton, with the Trotters supposedly having a bid of £3m accepted. However, The Sun claim that the deal is not yet complete, with Aston Villa, QPR and Southampton all looking to gazump Owen Coyle’s side.
