Liverpool enjoy uneventful deadline day
Liverpool made no further additions on transfer deadline day, after completing their business over the weekend.
Toby Alderweireld, who had been linked with a move for the majority of the summer, has admitted to the Metro that he moved to Atletico Madrid because they ‘wanted him more’.
The Reds managed to bring in fellow defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori to compensate for the loss of Jamie Carragher who retired at the end of last season.
Meanwhile Martin Skrtel, who had also been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, has told Sky Sports that leaving was ‘never an option’.
Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, now at Napoli, had reportedly been lining up a move for the defender he signed for the Reds back in 2007.
However, the Slovakia international, who turned in a fine performance in the 1-0 win over Manchester United at the weekend, is delighted to have remained on Merseyside.
Finally, Daniel Sturridge sat out of training on international duty with England this morning.
The striker, who was carrying a thigh injury during Sunday’s victory at Anfield, will be kept with the squad in the hope that he will be fit enough to feature in either of both of the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
