Liverpool reclaim top four spot with win over Hull
Liverpool returned to winning ways on New Year’s Day by beating Hull City 2-0 at Anfield, and moved back in to the top four of the Premier League in the process.
Daniel Agger put the Reds in front on thirty-six minutes before Luis Suarez doubled the hosts advantage in superb style with his twentieth goal of the season five minutes after the break.
The Uruguay international’s stunning free-kick equalled a Premier League record of twenty goals by January 1st, a total also achieved by Andy Cole for Newcastle United twenty years ago though of course, Suarez reached the landmark in just fifteen games.
The result sees Brendan Rodgers’ men leapfrog Merseyside rivals Everton back into the Champions League qualification places after the Toffee’s only managed to draw at Stoke City.
Arsenal remain top after beating Cardiff City 2-0, while there were also wins for second place Manchester City and third place Chelsea against Swansea City and Southampton respectively.
Tottenham Hotspur won at Old Trafford for the second season in succession to move above champions Manchester United, who slip to seventh.
Liverpool will now turn their attention to their FA Cup third round clash with Oldham Athletic, which takes place at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
