Liverpool take big guns to Russia
Brendon Rodgers has selected a strong squad for this evening’s Europa League round of 32 tie with Zenit St. Petersburg.
Other than January signings Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, who are both ineligible, there are no notable absentees.
Nineteen year-old Conor Coady could feature after making the trip, along with fellow youngsters Suso, Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling and Jonjo Shelvey.
Liverpool’s only away defeat in Europe this season came in Russia to Anzhi Makhachkala back in November. However, Zenit have not played competitively since their 1-1 draw with Anzhi in their final league game of the season back in December, something which could well give Liverpool an advantage.
Meanwhile, the club have stated that they will be willing to walk off the field of play if their black players are subjected to racial abuse.
A Zenit fan group recently demanded that the club refrain from employing black or homosexual players, with one fan disgracing himself by offering a banana to Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos in a match versus Anzhi two years ago.
Elsewhere, it has been reported that the club will battle with Inter Milan to sign Dynamo Moscow’s Hungarian winger Balazs Dzsudzsak.
The 26 year old has 50 full international caps, and scored 4 goals in 17 league appearances last season.
