Liverpool’s inconsistent form continued after they could only manage a 0-0 draw in the Europa league match against Augsburg.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was expected to get the best out of his team against a German outfit, who he knows very well from his time at Borussia Dortmund. This much also witnessedKlopp returning to Germany for the first time as a manager is leaving Dortmund. The return, though, was not a happy one since Augsburg appeared to be handed the advantage after Liverpool failed to score an away goal or even get a positive result.
An away goal would have been crucial with the return leg at Anfield in a few days. The impetus has now shifted to Augsburg, who will hope to score away from home. Such a possibility will leave Liverpool searching for two goals in response. The club are in a precarious position as far as European football is concerned, but this has largely been the status since the arrival of Klopp a few months ago. The German has been unable to make a major impact on results, as Liverpool continues to struggle in the league. The weekend’s 6-0 thrashing of relegation threatened Aston Villa was bound to give some much-needed confidence to the team, but they were not able to imply that in the Europa League game.
“We had a few chances, but I can’t say I am particularly happy. There’s no point getting carried away, 0-0 away from home isn’t a bad result, but we still have a lot of work to do.We didn’t really get our pressing game going, we didn’t get into our rhythm and failed to impose ourselves in midfield. There were a lot of things we could have done better. My problem is that I think, with our quality, we should do better, but I have to be patient,” said Klopp.
