OJO: IT JUST DIDN’T WORK OUT
Sheyi Ojo’s journey from a promising young talent to playing in Slovenia with Maribor highlights the unpredictable nature of a football career. When Ojo joined Liverpool at just 14 from MK Dons for around £2m, he was expected to be the next big thing. Under Jurgen Klopp’s guidance in the German’s first season at Anfield, Ojo made eight appearances, with Klopp publicly praising him as a “wonderful player” and stating his future at Liverpool was “100 percent” secure.
However, after his initial appearances, Ojo’s career trajectory took an unexpected turn. Injuries, particularly a serious back issue that sidelined him for four months, severely impacted his progress. Despite winning the U20 World Cup with England, Ojo struggled to find consistent form and was sent on several loan spells. He played for Wigan, Wolves, Fulham, Reims, Rangers under Steven Gerrard, Cardiff, and Millwall, but each move came with its own set of challenges, especially adapting to different managers, tactics, and positions.
Reflecting on his time at Cardiff, Ojo admitted, “I didn’t enjoy football last season,” particularly due to being played out of position as a wing-back. He expressed frustration with his situation and the lack of enjoyment. Now, at Maribor, Ojo seems to have found a club that understands his needs, where he can play to his strengths. He described the move as an opportunity to “play with a smile on my face” and show the world what he is truly capable of.
Ojo’s story is a reminder of how crucial the right environment and support can be for a player’s development. Despite the setbacks, he remains focused on rediscovering the joy of playing football and proving his worth, having found a sense of belonging in Slovenia after years of instability in various loan spells.
