RODGERS NOW THE FAVOURITE

For the past week most people have assumed that Roberto Martinez was all but certainly set to land the position as Liverpool’s new manager. However, recent events appear to have turned the situation completely on its head, with Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers now the bookies favourite to take over from the recently sacked Kenny Dalglish.

Having been given permission by his chairman and flown over to discuss the terms of a possible appointment, it was assumed that it would just be a matter of time before Roberto Martinez was appointed. The situation appeared to have become so advanced, that the Wigan board even gave their manager a deadline to make a decision on his future.

However, it now looks as though the Anfield outfit are turning their attentions elsewhere, with the club attempting to seek permission from Swansea to speak to their manager Brendan Rodgers. It is not the first time that Rodgers’ name has been brought into question, with the former Reading manager actually turning down the opportunity to talk to the Reds just seven days ago. It is now understood that Rodgers is more open to the offer, after his agent was sounded out and convinced that Rodgers is now a leading candidate for the position.

Swansea are continuing to state that their stance has not changed on the situation and that they have held no recent talks with Rodgers about his future. Time will tell on whether or not the Swans will be successful in keeping their manager, who has overseen the most successful period in the club’s history having first masterminded promotion to the Premier League before then establishing them in the top division. With the club also seen as one of the purest football sides in the top flight, it really is no surprise to see Liverpool turning this way.
