SALAH CONTRACT IN THE BALANCE
Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool is in the balance, with his contract situation now entering a critical phase. Salah is currently in the final year of his three-year, £43m extension, and while his influence on the pitch remains undeniable, several factors could determine whether he stays or leaves.
According to Warren Heyman, Head of Sports Law at Blackstone Solicitors, the key issues in contract negotiations with Salah include his age, current status, and the club’s broader financial and squad considerations. Salah, at 32, has been central to Liverpool’s success under Jürgen Klopp and continues to play a vital role this season, but his age will likely be a key consideration in Liverpool’s offer. Heyman also points out that Liverpool will not negotiate with Salah in isolation, as the club is facing a broader financial situation that includes other important contract talks, notably with Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The situation is further complicated by the potential departures of other key players, including Alexander-Arnold. Should the England international leave, the funds freed up from his wages could be used to address Salah’s salary demands. However, there is also the issue of Liverpool’s long-term squad strategy, with a focus on integrating new players. If there is an influx of new signings, retaining Salah’s experience might be crucial for maintaining a competitive squad.
Heyman emphasizes that Salah has significant bargaining power as a free agent come January, and while clubs from the Saudi Pro League and Barcelona have been linked with a move, the decision for Salah may not just be about financial terms but also about the competitive level of football. A move to Saudi Arabia, for example, might offer him lucrative terms but at the cost of playing in a lower-level competition compared to top European football.
If the negotiations do not lead to a compromise, Liverpool could be facing the reality of bidding Salah farewell in 2025, making this a crucial period for both the club and the player.
